Asia reverberates with optimism
Asia is culturally alive. From intimate traditional performing arts to mega live concerts involving international superstars, the region's cultural calendar is heavily committed. Arts and Music Festivals abound and thrive in practically every major city in the region. The film industry in Hong Kong, Korea and Japan has captured a huge following not only in its respective native country but also across Southeast Asia, with spin-offs of musicals and film city theme parks based on successful films. Moving into positive growth. In the last two quarters of 2009, many Asian nations registered double-digit growth, prompting the Asian Development Bank to revise its growth estimates for the region upwards each time. China, India and Indonesia in fact sustained positive GDP growth throughout the financial crisis. Its update in December 2009 puts growth estimates for the region at 4.2% this year and 6.8% in 2010, up from its earlier forecast of 3.6% and 6.5% respectively.
As Ben Bernanke puts it in his address at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco's Conference on Asia and the Global Financial Crisis in Oct 2009, "... the Asian response to the crisis appears thus far to have been effective ... in significant part the result of growth in domestic demand ... The revival of demand in Asia has, in turn, aided global economic growth... Importantly, its economic success has resulted in large-scale reductions in poverty and substantial improvements in the standards of living of hundreds of millions of people."
